In the project most of the sectors represented have the most valuable intrinsic qualities of the Sicilian agro-food area, and are also representative of the Italian style food; these are the sectors that have recorded the best performance on international markets with products that have reached a positioning and visibility closely linked to the territory.

Along with the oil sector is the most represented sector and both of them are based on the natural climate characteristics of Sicily island.

In Sicily it is concentrated the major production of Italian grapes with an increased recognition of the quality during the recent years.

The Sicilian wine industry is growing both in terms of production and quality; the quality of the Sicilian wines is collecting for years a growing appreciation on the international markets with a high concentration of excellent wines with denomination of origin recognized: 1 DOCG (Wines of Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin); 23 DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) 8 IGT (Typical Geographic Indication)

It 'also a growing sector characterized by favourable climate conditions which are reflected in a production particularly orientated to organic and extra virgin olive oil
The industry has evolved into niche production of high quality with a very large composition of varieties distributed throughout the whole Sicilian territory.
Most of the production is coming from protected origin denomination territories that have an offer of 9 lines of PDO extra virgin olive oil, also thanks to the specific characteristics of the land suited to farming organically; many producers have their portfolio of products formed by organic products.

The canning industry is one of the strengths of the Sicilian food system; through modern technological processes that store and process the raw materials are exploited both the qualities and the traditional methods the Sicilian gastronomic culture.
The industry refers to agricultural production of fruits and vegetables both in greenhouses and in open field, exploiting in this manner the cycles of seasonal production.
Even in the canning sector is used the marked ability of soil to organic production with a constant presence in the product portfolios of different ranges of organic products.
The area has a rich portfolio of products ranging from canned products harvested or processed in olive oil, typical dishes like the Sicilian sauces and condiments, to canned fruits, jams and honey.

Other sectors of the food industry

The Sicilian industry also embraces all sectors of typical Italian agro-food most common and popular in the world, especially those having more acceptance by consumers in the global market.
A significant representation of these sectors is also found among the companies participating in the project with: baked confectionery, chocolate, ice cream, typical preserved pastries, etc.; processing industry with citrus juices and citrus derivatives and in particular of IGP blood orange of Sicily; dairy industry with a wide ranges of typical Sicilian cheese and other products related to the milk sector; roasting coffee is one of the historical food processing sectors in Sicily.

Company Profile

The company “Old Oil Mill s.a.s.” produces Extra Virgin Oil of top quality. The olives come from the green and sunny hills of the area D.O.P. of Val di Mazara and are cultivated without chemical fertilizers and parasiticides. Recently built, the oil mill is equipped with a continuous cycle extraction system with processing at low temperature. The olives are picked by traditional methods

through selection by hand and pressed the same day to avoid quality alteration, assuring a medium acidity of 0.20. The oil is decanted naturally to preserve the precious pulp particles. The olive groves are of Biancolilla and Nocellara del Belice cultivar that find in the territory of Sambuca di Sicilia the ideal climatic conditions for the growth of the drupe, from which is extracted an oil without equal for quality, taste and colour.

The Organic Farm Arcoria Pietro is located in the Plain of Catania, in a hilly area particularly suitable for agriculture and olive cultivation. The Farm, which is a family enterprise, combines ancient tradition of high specialization with a modern entrepreneurial attitude, turned to constant research of the best quality. Company Profile

The Company “Barbuscia” starts up in 1950 in the feud Sortavilla, of Bourbon origin. Since the origins it maintains its characteristics of typically agricultural estate that focuses its main activities in the cereal growing branch. The farm house is in the heart of Sicily, in the territory of Piazza Armerina on a field of about 180 hectares. Thanks to its favourable position, on the hills that slope down from the Erei Mountains towards the plain of Catania, and also to a temperate microclimate (low humidity and sufficiently hot sun), the company changes its production, devoting good part of the area to artichoke fields, olive groves, tomato growing and other vegetable cultivation.

In 2001 the company makes a quality jump that in a few years brings to the realization of an appreciated product: both from a quality point of view and from that of a rigorous preserving of tradition and culture that make it to be an original and appreciated brand.

Company Profile

The F.lli Russo Distillery, whose origins go back to 1870, is situated on a pleasant hill at the foot of Etna, not so far from the beautiful ionic coast, in the town of S.Venerina, province of Catania. Through the production of distillates, typical liqueurs and handicraft rosolios, the company’s purpose has been to preserve tradition, exalt Sicilian fragrances and express love for its land assuring genuineness and quality. The used raw materials (citrus fruits, herbs, various fruits) come from biologic cultivations, where possible. As soon as they are picked they are processed with handicraft methods, so that their unmistakable aroma and their beneficial properties are kept intact.

Eukion is a new company that bases its activity on competences and experiences that derive from years of researches on recipes, raw materials, ingredients and production techniques. The particular production technique used in the factory of Belpasso, at the foot of Etna, consists in working the crystals formed during deep-freezing in such a way that they result particularly small. The result is softness, typical characteristic of the Real Sicilian Water Ice, which makes the Water Ice of Nevaroli dell’Etna unmistakable.The use of only Sicilian citrus fruits juice and the selection of the “Minnulata”, typical almond flavored water ice served for breakfast, make these products to be special and bearers of exclusive quality and tradition.

The Company Oil Mill Cutrera, a family enterprise, is situated on an area of about 50 hectares in the territory of Chiaramonte Gulfi, in the heart of the Hyblaean Mountains in the south-eastern area of Sicily. Since generations it deals with olive cultivation, a job carried on with love and devotion. For many years the company has received prizes and rewards for the quality of its products in some of the most prestigious contests: Gold Medal Los Angeles 2005; 1° classed at the “Leone d’oro” contest of Masters 2004; 1° classed at the “Festambiente” contest of Grosseto 2004; 3 olive Guida Slow Food 2003-2005; 1° classed at “Ercole Oliario” contest. The point in favour of the Oil Mill Cutrera is the diversity of the three extraction lines that allows adopting the extraction technique according to the variety and the ripeness of the olives, being able to obtain intense and wellbalanced fruity oils. The olives are processed in the company mills within six hours from their picking. All process operations are carried out with meticulous attention rigorously by cold extraction. Ortogel starts up in 1978 from a family of citrus fruit growers and technicians coming from the agricultural and food industry. After a first phase of frozen vegetables production, in 1982 the company turns its fittings to the production of red orange natural juice and of all other Sicilian citrus fruits, applying the technology of cold working and freezing, used for frozen vegetables, to the citrus fruit sector, creating a red orange juice, natural, not derived from concentrates, without additives, neither pasteurization, of top quality. Thirty hectares between vineyards and olive groves, on the gentle slope that plunges into the African Sea, volcanic lands where, within our ancestors’ memory, grapevine has been cultivated, therefore it becomes at the same time genetic memory and expression of our territory. A mild climate in winter, warm and dry summers, an extraordinary brightness, an almost maniacal precision in crops, allow the plants to produce a healthy and delicate fruit. Besides the autochthonous vineyards, also international varieties have been cultivated and they have found a natural habitat in these lands.

The founder began his activity in 1870, exploiting and increasing the family olive groves.This activity was taken up by his sons. Indicated among the Wine Cities Ways, Sirignano Countryside is situated in a Sicilian area which has got a high bent by nature for the vine growing: in the farthest South of DOC Monreale area and in the middle of DOC Alcamo area in the Belice Valley.In this fertile context, in the hearth of the agricultural estate, stands the ancient Baglio of Sirignano where the family of Marquis de Gregorio since 1730 has a great passion for the vine growing. Nowadays the estate is managed by Massimo de Gregorio that takes after the whole product processing chain with great care and devotion: from the choice of the varieties to the bottling and the direct selling. The vineyards growing is strictly organic and offers selected qualities of autochthonous grapes such as Catarratto, Grecanico, Insolia and Nero d’Avola and well-known international varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Recently the estate has increased also the value of the olive-grove, starting an organic growing of Cerasuola, Biancolilla and Belice Nocellara for producing precious qualities of extra virgin olive oil.
